Here’s what’s happening in April and May 2011. . . .


Emily Eagen – DOCTORAL VOICE RECITAL

Abandoned lovers, Spanish bullfighting, a royal child switched at birth, the perfumes of rose and jasmine, Buddhism and the cosmos, a deck of cards, echoes of Verdi, Orpheus taming the wild beasts, dancing beneath the moon. . .these images and many more will be woven into a a diverse program of art songs, early sacred songs and folk songs that meet at the crossroads of genre and express the beauties of nature, the mysteries of existence, and the passions of love in florid bursts of melody.

Works include 17th-century sacred Italian songs with theorbo, Faure settings of poetry by Leconte de Lisle, Four Rilke Songsby CUNY faculty member Norman Carey, Spanish folk songs collected and arranged by Lorca, Sephardic songs with guitar, oud, and percussion. . .and maybe a few surprises along the way!

THE WHISTLING WOLVES IN AND AROUND TOWN

The Whistling Wolves are the only whistling – harmonica – ukulele – fiddle – guitar – banjo – jaw’s-harp – mandolin – bass – vocal harmony group around: “great traditional music with a few originals thrown in!”

MONTHLY OLD TIME/BLUEGRASS/EARLY COUNTRY/ GOSPEL HARMONY WORKSHOP AT THE JALOPY THEATRE

We’ve expanded to two classes on our once-a-month Sundays: an early class for people who want an introduction to the styles, and a later class, co-taught with Don Friedman, that focuses on duo and trio rep. This is the most pleasurable music on earth to jump in and sing – come and try it out!
